Tobi Adebowale
The VennLaw team comprises highly resourceful lawyers with domain expertise across different sectors of the economy. The team is led by the Managing Partner, Tobi Adebowale who most recently worked with UK’s energy ministers on strategy for delivering sustainable, secure and affordable energy as a Policy Adviser in a central strategy team at the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Before then, he led the legal department at Nigeria’s leading indigenous oil drilling company, Depthwize Nigeria Limited and worked with the Energy Practice Group at Nigeria’s top law firm, Banwo & Ighodalo. He joined Banwo & Ighodalo from another notable commercial law firm, George Etomi & Partners.
Tobi has over eight years’ experience providing transaction advisory services in relation to the regulatory and commercial framework for investment in the Oil & Gas, Power, Infrastructure and Technology sectors. He has negotiated relevant agreements for the establishment, development and construction of thermal power plants, hydro power plants, a modular refinery, embedded and captive power projects, distribution infrastructure for the supply of electricity, rural electrification and renewable energy projects. He has also advised on private equity investment and restructuring of petrochemical companies; divestment and acquisition of oil and gas assets; and operational agreements in the energy sector among others. In addition, he has advised on the acquisition of a bank, the merger of two notable beverage packaging companies, the establishment of several financial technology companies and capital raise of technology startup companies to the tune of over US$3,000,000.
Between December 2019 and February 2022, Tobi served as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Young Lawyers’ Forum, in which capacity I formulated and implemented transformational policies for the advancement of over 25,000 young lawyers across Nigeria.
In the past, he served as a member of the collaborative committee of the Nigerian Bar Association-Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) and the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) on business reforms which drafted the Business Facilitation (Omnibus) Act; and a member of the NBA Lagos Continuing Legal Education & Mentorship Committee.
Tobi has contributed research papers on Renewable Energy, Aviation, Health Litigation, Gas Regulation and Water Resources to the Lawyard Journal, International Law Office, Getting the Deal Through, and the World Bank’s Enabling the Business of Agriculture (EBA) journals respectively, among others.
